Training objectives: This program involves professional knowledge of such aspects as environmental pollution control technologies, ecological restoration, environmental monitoring, environmental assessment, EHS (environment, health and safety) management, and environmental information systems and focuses on the cultivation of abilities in environmental pollution control technologies (the basic skills required for engineers engaged in the development, engineering design, and project acceptance and commissioning of processes such as water pollution control, solid waste treatment and disposal, air pollution control, and ecological restoration, which are collectively known as the hard technologies for environmental protection) and environmental management and evaluation skills (the skills required for environmental management talent, including environmental assessment, environmental planning, corporate EHS management, and environmental information system analysis, which are collectively known as the soft environmental science).
Characteristic advantages: The program features a team of highly academic teachers with abundant practical experience, among which 75% hold doctor’s degrees and 75% hold the title of associate professor. In 2010, the program was designated as one of the key programs of Wenhua College by passing the Quality Evaluation of Undergraduate Teaching in Hubei Province; in 2013, the program was included in the Talent Training Plan of Colleges and Universities for Strategic Emerging (Pillar) Industries in Hubei Province. The program boasts a complete range of professional laboratories with advanced experimental equipment as well as a good academic style. With a focus on the cultivation of practical ability, students of this program have participated in national and provincial vocational competitions, such as the “Challenge Cup,” the “National University Student Social Practice and Science Contest on Energy Saving & Emission Reduction,” and “Craftsmen’s Cup” (Hubei), and achieved excellent results. About 15% of the students are accepted into postgraduate programs, with most of them studying in well-known universities in China, including the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the Renmin University of China, the China University of Geosciences, Yunnan University, and South-Central University for Nationalities.

Employment prospects: To engage in the process design, commissioning, operation, or management of environmental protection projects in a design institute involved in municipal engineering, construction, or petroleum; environmental planning, assessment, or sample testing in an environmental protection bureau, a monitoring station, or an environmental assessment company; or consulting, assessment, or certification of EHS management and cleaner production in a large multinational company.
