On February 21, 2021, with the approval of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, Wuhan University of Science and Technology City College was renamed City University of Wuhan (CityUWH) by the Department of Education of Hubei Province (E Zhenghan [2021] No. 3). Currently, the College has 19,827 students in total, offering 37 undergraduate programs and 13 vocational programs, spanning across seven major academic disciplines including economics, literature, science, engineering, medicine, management, and arts. It has developed a distinct educational characteristic with a primary focus on engineering disciplines while fostering balanced growth across multiple fields of study.
WHCC currently has two campuses, located in Wuhan and Hong'an. The Wuhan campus is located in the East Lake Scenic Area, a national 5A-level tourist attraction in Wuhan, surrounded by picturesque lake views and verdant landscapes, with access to a world-class greenway, while the Hong'an campus is located at the birthplace of the Red Revolution and the world-renowned hometown of numerous generals, enjoying exquisite natural scenery and a pristine ecological environment. The campuses cover an area of more than 1763.54 mu (about 291 acres) in total, with a building area of 594,500 square meters for complete teaching and living facilities. There are 77 laboratories and practical training facilities, along with teaching and experimental instruments and equipment valued at 106 million yuan. Additionally, the Medical School, in collaboration with Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, has established the "Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University Nursing Internship and Training Base," which has been designated as a provincial-level internship and training base. Furthermore, the "Nursing Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center" of the Medical School has been honored as a key provincial experimental teaching demonstration center. Also, the library houses a collection of 1.5867 million printed books, enriching the academic resources for both faculty and students.
WHCC is positioned as an applied undergraduate institution, adhering to the educational philosophy of "Nurturing Talent, Embracing Excellence, Cultivating Distinctive Strengths, Striving for Leadership." Its program development is closely aligned with societal needs, integrating seamlessly with regional development. Seven majors, namely "Nursing," "Computer Science and Technology," "Civil Engineering," "Business Administration," "Mechanical Design, Manufacturing, and Automation," "Visual Communication," and "E-commerce," have been approved as first-class undergraduate major construction sites. "Business Administration" stands as both a Provincial-Level Key Cultivating Major and a Provincial-Level Key Cultivating Discipline. Four majors, including "Computer Science and Technology," "Logistics Management," "Civil Engineering," and "Nursing," have been selected for the provincial-level "Comprehensive Reform of Majors" pilot program in ordinary colleges and universities of Hubei Province. Additionally, three majors - "Computer Science and Technology," "E-commerce," and "Mechanical Design, Manufacturing, and its Automation" - have been approved for the Provincial-Level Strategic Emerging (Pillar) Industries Talent Cultivation Projects for Undergraduates. In 2022, the Information Engineering School's project "Reform and Practice of Thorough Computation Thinking Ability Cultivation Mode under the New Engineering Background" and the Medical School's project "Construction and Practice of Application-Oriented Nursing Talent Cultivation Mode from a Collaborative Education Perspective" were honored with provincial-level teaching achievement awards.
WHCC attaches great importance to the development of its faculty, vigorously promoting the "Key Teachers Cultivation Project" as part of its "Three Major Programs," complemented by the implementation of the "High-level Talent Recruitment Plan," "Young Teachers Doctoral Degree Cultivation Plan," and other "Four Plans." There are currently 637 full-time teachers. Among them, there are 544 teachers with a Master's Degree or higher, 200 teachers with vice-senior and higher professional technical titles, and 48 teachers with senior professional titles. Three research teams have been approved as Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Scientific Innovation Teams of Hubei Provincial Universities: the "Green Energy-saving and Environmentally Friendly Functional Building Materials" team from the Urban Construction School, the "Path and Policy Research on 'Leading Dragons, Chain-driven Clusters, and Star-network Collaboration' of Hubei's Strategic Emerging Industries" team from the Economics and Management School, and the "Research and Application of Social Situation Awareness Based on Spatio-temporal Big Data" team from the Information Engineering School. Besides, four professional teaching teams - the "Computer Science and Technology" teaching team, the "Green Building" course cluster teaching team, the "Nursing" teaching team, and the "Business Administration" teaching team- have been awarded as Provincial-Level Teaching Teams by Hubei's higher education institutions. Moreover, the teaching and research offices for Computer Fundamentals, Computer Software Technology, Basic Medicine, and E-commerce have been selected as Provincial-Level Excellent Grassroots Teaching Organizations in Hubei's higher education institutions.
WHCC has been vigorously enhancing the caliber of its research endeavors. In the past three years, our teachers have undertaken two national-level scientific research projects, 5 provincial-level scientific research projects, 5 educational research projects, 1 Humanities and Social Science Project of the Ministry of Education, 25 horizontal research projects, 63 college-level scientific research projects, and 98 teaching and research projects. Moreover, the College has received 1 Second Prize and 1 Third Prize of the Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards.
WHCC actively innovates a collaborative talent cultivation mechanism involving partnerships between the College, government agencies, and enterprises. There are 175 internship and training bases that have been established in economically developed areas such as the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta, as well as in the Wuhan urban circle, to strengthen the cultivation of students' practical abilities. Great emphasis is placed on innovation and entrepreneurship education, with the College having secured approval for 77 national and Hubei Provincial Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Programs, as well as 45 Collaborative Education Projects from the Ministry of Education. Many students have participated in these projects, fostering a large pool of versatile talents highly sought after by enterprises. The College encourages and supports students to participate in off-campus science and technology competitions, leading to a total of 550 individuals (times) winning major awards in prestigious contests like the "University Students' Challenge Cup" and the "Internet Plus" competition over the past three years. By encouraging students to develop multiple goals and achieve success through multiple channels, the College extensively collaborates with employers to establish employment bases, ensuring a stable initial employment rate of over 90% for graduates. At the same time, it also facilitates conditions for students aspiring to further their studies, helping them prepare for postgraduate entrance examinations, as a result of which the postgraduate admission rate has maintained over 11% in the past three years.
WHCC has strategically positioned its talent cultivation objective as "anchoring in the Wuhan urban circle, serving the Hubei industry clusters, and radiating throughout the Central China economic belt, with a focus on both professional and moral excellence, highlighting individuality, and instilling a strong sense of social responsibility." Upholding the educational philosophy of "Nurturing talent with morality as the priority," the College places great emphasis on moral education. Since 2006, it pioneered and consistently implemented the unique 'Moral Education Scholarship' system in Chinese higher education, attracting attention and commendation from central leadership. WHCC's Party Committee adheres to the in-depth study and implementation of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the Party's guidelines and policies, fully exerting its core political function. Remarkable achievements have been made in Party building and ideological and political work, evidenced by winning 1 special prize, 2 first prizes for the National Private College's Outstanding Achievements in Ideological and Political Work, and 1 third prize for Outstanding Achievements of the Organization Department of the CPC Hubei Provincial Committee. It has also been honored as an "Advanced Unit in College Students' Ideological and Political Education in Hubei Province", a "Civilized Unit in Wuhan City", one of the "Top Ten Safe Campuses in Wuhan", and "Advanced Unit of Comprehensive Social Governance in Wuhan" for five consecutive years. According to research and evaluation by the Airuishen China Alumni Network, the College has maintained a top-five ranking among over 260 independent colleges nationwide, securing the fourth place with a score of 99.72 in 2019, and topping the list among independent colleges in Hubei Province. In the 2022 Chinese University Rankings, it was rated as one of China's top private universities, attaining a six-star distinction among private universities, ranking sixth nationally among private institutions.
