Wenhua College
Wenhua College, formerly known as Wenhua College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, is a full-time college approved by the Ministry of Education in May 2003. It was co-founded by Wuhan Meilian Real Estate Co., LTD and Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST for short). In May 2014, the Ministry of Education approved the conversion of the college to an independent private undergraduate college and renamed it Wenhua College.
Wenhua College is located next to HUST, with a straight-line distance of less than one kilometer. It is situated on Chuangye Street in the hinterland of Optics Valley of China in Wuhan East Lake New Hi-tech Development Zone, adjacent to the beautiful East Lake Scenic Area. The campus covers an area of over 893,000 square meters, with lots of green trees and red maple trees. The College is regarded as one of the top ten beautiful universities and colleges in Wuhan. Going to Wenhua College to see the red maple leaves in autumn has become a new choice for the citizens of Wuhan. With a total construction area of 532,600 square meters, the College is well equipped with modern education and living facilities. The College is rigorous in academic research. Mr. Wu Wengang is the Chairman of the Board of Wenhua College. The President is the famous educator Professor Liu Xianjun, who is also the Chairman of the Institutions Research Branch of China Association of Higher Education, Deputy Director of the Academic Committee of HUST, and doctoral tutor. The Honorary President is Professor Zhang Yongchuan, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Wenhua teachers and students share the high-quality educational resources of HUST. One third of the national famous teachers and a large number of outstanding teachers and cadres of HUST teach and work in Wenhua College. The College has also appointed a group of famous scholars and experts from Wuhan famous universities as academic leaders of the College, its departments or its disciplines.
The College sticks to the socialist orientation in running school and fully implements the educational policies of the CPC and our country, establishing the core student-centered educational philosophy and adhering to the school motto of Being Knowledgeable and Down-to-earth and Having Firm and Lofty Aspirations. It insists on running school by educators, advocates co-creation and tries to realize mutual development. In the educational reform, it tries to optimize its structure, make breakthroughs in key points, strengthen the foundation, and constantly innovate. The Orientation of the College is to build a high-level application-oriented college. Guided by the needs of regional economic and social development, serving Hubei province, central China and even the whole country, it aims to cultivate high-quality application-oriented talents with modern innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities and a high sense of social responsibility for the front line of production and services.
The College has more than 17,000 full-time students and 43 undergraduate majors and 15 three-year college majors, covering 6 disciplines of engineering, management, culture, law, economics and art. A discipline development pattern of focusing on engineering and coordinately developing of multiple disciplines has been initially formed. The College enrolls students from 28 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across the country and has also established cooperative relations with many famous universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and other countries.
With the help and guidance of HUST, the College has established a scientific teaching quality guarantee system. There are more than 800 full-time teachers, including nearly 400 full-time professors and associate professors. 76% of the teachers have doctoral or master degrees and 40.8% are double-qualified teachers.
Adhering to the close combination of scientific research and teaching, Wenhua College actively serves the local economic and social development, has set up six characteristic major orientations and five characteristic major groups in the pilot project of transformation and development in Hubei Province, and has a number of provincial excellent courses, provincial high-quality courses, provincial key disciplines, undergraduate programs of talent cultivating plan for strategic emerging (pillar) industries. It is equipped with Provincial Key Demonstration Center for Experimental Education of Hubei Higher Education, Provincial Practice Training Base of Hubei Higher Education, Hubei Brand Development Research Center, Hubei Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Center, Hubei Talent Training Base for New Media Service Outsourcing and other provincial institutions.
The personalized education of Wenhua College has prominent characteristics. Wenhua College has created the “39 personalized education model”, which refers to three types of students (namely academic students, practical students and potential students), three key points (potential, ambition and space) and three one project (one plan for each person, one curriculum schedule for each student, one excellent course for each teacher). The College strives to provide suitable education for each student and follows the path of personalized education which is respecting students, strict requirements, scientific guidance and self-study. The College will create a diverse and innovative talent cultivating model, implement personalized education, and strive to create a campus environment and atmosphere conducive to the healthy growth of innovative and practical talents.
The exploration of personalized education in the College has attracted dozens of famous educators such as Pan Maoyuan, Zhou Yuanqing, Gu Mingyuan, Ye Lan, Wang Yingjie, Qu Zhenyuan and Zhong Binglin for investigation and guidance, which energized the academic atmosphere and promoted the exploration of personalized education. “Wenhua College is a college of dreams and pursuits, where everyone can find space for free development,” experts said. In March 2013, the research project of Exploration and Practice of Personalized Education for Undergraduate Students in Independent Colleges won the first prize of the 7th Teaching Achievements Award of Hubei Province’s Universities.
The College upholds the fine tradition of humanistic quality education in HUST and creates a humanistic atmosphere for students and teachers. It always holds the forums of academicians, celebrities and entrepreneurs. So far, more than 20 academicians and principals such as Yang Shuzi, Li Bacon, Luo Jun, Li Deren, Yang Jiafu and Ye Chaohui gave lectures to students in Wenhua College for more than 50 times. The keynote speakers of Lecture Room, famous writers, social and cultural celebrities, etc. are often invited to visit the College to give lectures. These activities have stimulated the students’ enthusiasm for innovation and entrepreneurship and helped to form a good learning atmosphere.
Wenhua College has been rated as the Top Ten Independent Colleges in China, the first batch of Innovation-oriented and Employment-oriented Colleges in China, the Most Popular Independent Colleges in the Country, the Advanced Non-governmental Organizations in Hubei Province, and the National Advanced Independent Colleges by the government, some social institutions and authoritative medias.
From 2015 to 2019, Wenhua College ranked second in the Top 100 Private Universities in China by cuaa.net and was the five-star private college in China. The College was awarded as National Socially Influential Private Colleges and China’s Socially influential Employment Model Colleges by xinhua.net.
At the beginning of 2020, the winner list of Model Power·China Education Online 2019 Education Selection was released. Wenhua College, Tsinghua University, Peking University, etc. were awarded the Top 50 Undergraduate Universities in Media Convergence Influence in 2019. Wenhua College was the only private college in Hubei that had this honor.
In the ranking of Applied Universities by Guangzhou Daily, Wenhua College ranked the first among private universities in Hubei province for four consecutive years and the 259th among 910 participating universities in China in 2020.
